Assessment of Urbanization in Census-units through : Construction of a Generalized Urbanization Index: A Study for Economically Backward Regions of West Bengal during 1991 to 2011

Title: Assessment of Urbanization in Census-units through : Construction of a Generalized Urbanization Index: A Study for Economically Backward Regions of West Bengal during 1991 to 2011
Authors: Mookherjee, Subikash; Pattanayaek, Sanjoy Kumar; Mondal, Debasish
Abstract: The Census Authority of India usually provides data regarding the nature
of a few urbane characteristics for all the village units and thereby classifies
a place as Census Town, which is considered as the lowest unit of
urbanization. From the perspective of urbanization, regions of any state,
consisting of blocks can be classified as economically advanced or
economically backward on the basis of existence of Census Towns in it as
urban places are likely to bring more prosperity in terms of standard of
living. However, proper assessment of urbanization in a single measurement
scale, of all village units of a particular block is not done so far. An attempt
in that direction is made in this article through construction of a Generalized
Urbanization Index (GUI) for all the village units of some blocks, selected
through systematic-stratified sampling, from three major districts of Paschim
Medinipur, Bankura and Purulia, which are known as ‘so called’ backward
regions. The proposed GUI for a census-unit is constructed with two
components - the town criteria index and the amenities index and the
relative weights of both the component-indices and the underlying
dimension indices are determined through the application of Iterative
Average Correlation Method indicating some movement towards actuality
in comparison to prevailing two other methods of weight determination -
the Equal Weights Principle and the Principal Component Analysis.

Empowering Women through Entrepreneurship: An Empirical Investigation

Title: Empowering Women through Entrepreneurship: An Empirical Investigation
Authors: Chatterjee, Sibaram
Abstract: The empowerment of women is a very important element of sustainable
economic growth in any nation. A woman is said to be empowered, if her
access to the different constituents of development, viz., health, education,
earnings, opportunities, rights, freedom, social recognition, political
participation and ability to protest are improved. Women’s participation
in entrepreneurial activities may play powerful role in their empowerment.
Increase in women’s income level through participation in entrepreneurial
activities may leads to better economic security and they get a space in
their household decision making process and thus in the society. The present
study thus makes an attempt to find out the interrelation between women’s
entrepreneurship development and their empowerment with reference to
two districts of West Bengal. The study hypothesizes that entrepreneurship
enables women empowerment. For the construction of women empowerment
indices fuzzy set theory has been used. The study observes that self
entrepreneurship has positive and significant effect on women’s mobility,
economic security, participation in household decisions, contribution in
household expenses, ability to protest and thus in overall women
empowerment, but it has not that kind of effect on women’s relative freedom
and political and legal awareness. The study concludes that
entrepreneurship induces financial aspect of empowerment whereas the
social aspect of empowerment is still in dark irrespective of an effect of self
entrepreneurship.

A Study on Influence of Geographical Difference on : Grocery Purchase Behaviour

Title: A Study on Influence of Geographical Difference on : Grocery Purchase Behaviour
Authors: Datta, Mahua; Datta, Debraj
Abstract: India today is witnessing a plethora of activities in Retail. But the major
concern for them is the diversity in the Indian consumer behaviour. A good
number of studies on consumer choice of retail formats have been devoted
to the consumer demographics. Studies have shown that certain
demographic groups are associated with certain store formats and the
store attributes like price competitiveness, product selection, and
atmosphere are drivers of format choice. This paper focused on analysing
the grocery purchase behaviour in order to find out the factors influencing
the purchase of grocery and the extent of heterogeneity in the consumer
perception towards these factors in rural, semi urban and urban market.
The study was done at two levels in three catchment areas and the data
were analysed by Factor Analysis and ANOVA which revealed Retail
Purchase Factors (RPFs) that could influence grocery purchase behaviour
