Title: Public Libraries in Colonial Hoogly, 1858-1947
Authors: Jana, Bhakti Pada
Abstract: East India Company in India neglected mass education and indigenous village schools
which imparted elementary education, however limited and crude, to the people. With a view to
eradicating illiteracy and to continue the literary power of neo-literates libraries were
established in villages, town, and cities in the country. This study has confined its focus on 27 out
of 62 Public libraries in Hoogly to reveal their history of evolution, their programmes, and to
compare them with the present situation. Libraries were established to spread literacy as
freedom fighters and educated person believed education would boost nationalism

The Patuas of Medinipur and the Government in a Globalised Context

Title: The Patuas of Medinipur and the Government in a Globalised Context
Authors: Mandal, Keya
Abstract: This paper discusses the lot of patuas of the south-western part of West Bengal (the
undivided district of Medinipur). These scroll painters or chitrakaras are professional artists
(craftsmen) by caste, now in straitened conditions. Both the Central and State Governments
attempt to eradicate their poverty. This paper investigates the effect of governmental action and
how these artists have fared in a post-colonial era, especially in a situation of commercialized
cash economy in a globalised world
