Authors: Paul, Biswajit; Sana, Ashish Kumar
Abstract: Infrastructure sector is a key driver for the Indian economy. Infrastructure
may be termed as physical infrastructure which may include social
infrastructure. Importance of infrastructure in economic growth cannot be
overemphasized. Infrastructure is the lifeline of an economy and the fate of
the economy is intricately linked to the development or otherwise of its
infrastructure. The objective of the paper is to examine the effect of
infrastructure investment on economic growth of India. Gross Capital
Formation (GCF) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are considered as
infrastructural development macroeconomic variable and economic growth
variable respectively. The data have been collected for a period of 57 years
i.e. 1960 – 2016 (World Bank). Different charts and graphs have been used
to analyse the status of infrastructure investment during the study period.
Short run and long run relationships between infrastructure investment
and economic growth have been examined using time series econometric
tools like VECM and Cointegration test. It is found that infrastructure
investment and economic growth of India is integrated in long run which
implies that there is a long run relationship between them.

Authors: Roy, Arijit
Abstract: To achieve the U.N. Millennium Development Goal of securing “Water for
All” which ensures sound health of rural people especially of women
population and a sustainable environment, reforms in the rural drinking
water supply sector in India were adopted in 1999 in India and Pilot
Projects in some selected districts across 26 states were taken up. The
basic concepts of the reforms include community participation in the
planning, implementation, operation and maintenance of the schemes of
its choice. This is a paradigm shift from supply driven to a demand
responsive approach, centralised to the decentralised service delivery, from
the top down to the bottom up approach and ultimately to change the role
of the Government from that of a service provider to a facilitator.
Swajaldhara is part of those reform initiatives in rural water supply &
sanitation sector in India. On 25.12.2002, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of
India, Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, launched Swajaldhara Scheme by scaling
up the said Sector Reforms initiatives throughout the country. Water supply
is ensured to the rural population by Piped Water Supply Schemes (PWSS)
and Spot Source Water Supply Schemes (SSWSS). A SSWSS is adopted to
cater smaller population and also where the raw water requires no or
minimum treatment. Swajaldhara lies in this category. This paper attempts
to analyse the impact of Bajitpur Matangini Swajaldhara Scheme (BMSS)
on the livelihood of rural people of Bajitpur village of Purba Medinipur
district in the state of West Bengal. A cost – benefit analysis in the form of
simple income saving due to subscribing Swajaldhara, has been carried
out. The impact of clean and pure water for drinking and sanitation upon
health is explored. Also, secondary income from kitchen garden as a byproduct
of Swajaldhara has been taken into consideration. The study reveals
that the overall impact of Swajaldhara scheme is positive and significant,
and hence it demands a systematic and well-organised planning-execution
approach to such sector-reforms projects.

Authors: Saha, Anandaraj
Abstract: The BRICS is considered as the most promising and emerging markets’
group and pool of economies. For the last few years, the economies of the
US and BRICS are sharing increasing trade, economic and financial
linkages. As the emerging economies aspire to become truly developed
nations, the issue of heavy interdependence on developed economies is
often addressed. However, the patterns of influence of the US on the equity
markets of the BRICS have undergone tremendous changes in the recent
years. The present study aims to investigate the inter-linkages and causal
relationships between the US and BRICS equity markets. The study
exclusively depends on different econometric models and techniques such
as unit root test, cointegration and causality tests to evaluate and analyse
the empirical data. The overall results report changing market dynamics
and time varying integration among the countries across the years of study.
The study also finds the fading away of the US supremacy over the BRICS
markets and a story of Chinese supremacy as a leader in world economy.

Title: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF VIDYASAGAR CENTRAL CO-OPERATIVE BANK LTD. IN PASCHIM MEDINIPUR DISTRICT: AN APPLICATION OF MALMQUIST PRODUCTIVITY INDEX
Authors: Chatterjee, Sibaram
Abstract: The present study is an attempt to analysis the efficiency and total factor
productivity growth of a cooperative bank (VCC bank) at the branch level
for the period 2007 to 2012. The study also makes a district level
comparison of efficiency scores and productivity growth of VCC bank with
that of SBI and RRB. Bank efficiency has been assessed by applying DEA
methodology. Malmquest productivity index has been used to quantify the
branch wise total factor productivity growth over the study period. The
empirical results establish that there is a declining trend in overall technical
efficiency scores of VCC bank. The empirical results also show that this
bank registered a negative growth rate of productivity. District level interbank
comparison shows that SBI has the highest average overall technical
efficiency, followed by RRBs and VCC bank over the sample period. The
study also examines that the total factor productivity growth of VCC bank
is not significantly lower than that of RRB and also SBI. The study confirms
that ownership structure has no impact on TFP growth of the banks.
