Authors: Barick, Soumitra; Chattopadhyay, Sandip; Purkait, Bulbul; Sinha, Nirmalya Kumar; Ghosh, Debidas
Abstract: The socioeconomic condition, nutritional status makes a complex relationship on the risk
of HIV infections and also the progression of the infection in the body. The differentiationin disease
progressionamong males and femaleswas little understood in the rural settings of West Bengal. A hospital
based cross sectional study was conducted to investigate the impact of nutritional status in terms of body
mass index and socioeconomic status (SES) on HIV infection status among the people of three districts of
Jangalmahal areas of West Bengal.
The study was conducted in the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital, Midnapore. The socioeconomic
status of the participants was collected through a questionnaire method and height and weight were
measured to determine the nutritional status of the HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals.
The highest numbers of HIV-positive individuals were found in the age group of =35 years in both sexes.
Unemployed males and females had 3.91 and 1.28 times greater chance of being HIV infected. It was
observed that the risk of HIV infection was associated with low education (P<0.01), low family income
(P<0.001) and low socio-economic condition (P<0.001) among the female and occupational condition
(P<0.01) of the male.
The study shows some indicators of SES were related to HIV infection.

Authors: Sarkar, Swaraj Kumar; De, Subrata Kumar
Abstract: The olfactory apparatus in two different benthopelagic; snakehead fishes of Channa punctatus
and Channa striatus (Channiformes: Channidae) were studied to explore the taxon based comparative
morphometry among the experimental species. The olfactory apparatus of C. punctatus and C. striatus were
separately fixed in aqueous Bouin’s solution and 4% paraformaldehyde in 0.1 (M) phosphate buffer (pH.
7.2); studied under optical light microscopes. The distinct anatomical variations [i.e., number of olfactory
lamella in each rosette, diameter of olfactory chambers, shape and size of olfactory bulbs and lobes, length
of olfactory nerve tracts, etc.] were examined. The histoarchitecture of olfactory rosette also shows
prominent differences in arrangement pattern of olfactory lamellae, distribution of sensory and nonsensory
cellular components, etc. These variations may reflect species specific differences belonging to
genus Channa that helps in morphoanatomy based cladistic approach of fish taxonomy.

Authors: Bhattacharjee, Satabdi; Banerjee, Neepa; Santra, Tanaya; Chatterjee, Surjani; Chatterjee, Sandipan; Mukherjee, Shankarashis
Abstract: A study has been undertaken to assess the impact of undergoing regular training in football.
42 randomly selected Bengaleemale adults, age range 18-24 years, receiving training in football for at least
a period of 6 years and practicing it daily for a minimum duration of 2 hours six days a week and with no
chronic disease history (self- reported) constituted the Football Group (FG). On the other hand, 48 individuals
of comparable age and ethnic background and without exposure to any kind of formal training in physical
exercise including football were also randomly selected for the purpose of the study constituting the
Control Group (CG). It has been found that the FG individuals have significantly (P<0.05) lower Waist
Circumference (WC), Hip Circumference(HC) and Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR), Waist to Height Ratio (WHtR).
On the other hand, the lower back and hamstring flexibility of the FG individuals are significantly (P<0.05)
better compared to CG individuals. The result revealed that individuals undergoing training in football for
at least 6 years and practicing it daily for a period of 2 hours for at least six days a week have significantly
(P<0.05) favorable body physique status in terms of WC, HC, WHR, WHtR, AVI and BAI and have better (P
< 0.05) fitness and flexibility, compared to their age and sex matched CG counterparts.
